In his December 18 lecture on Israel and the Eisenhower administration, the renowned foreign-policy analyst Michael Doran brought us inside the mind of President Eisenhower—showing how, at the height of the Suez crisis, Eisenhower came to rethink entirely his own views on the conflict between Israel and the Arabs, and thereby initiated a striking turnaround in American foreign policy.

On Monday, January 8, moving forward in his series on Israel and the American presidents, Dr. Doran will take us inside the administrations of John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson. We’ll see how the U.S.–Israel relationship continued to develop against the dramatic backdrop of President Kennedy’s assassination, the succession and re-election of President Johnson, the turmoil of the Vietnam war, the end of David Ben-Gurion’s second stint as Israel’s prime minister—and the Six-Day War that changed the landscape of the whole Middle East and helped bring about a new American perception of the Jewish state as a vital strategic asset.
