Searching the archives of the EMI Music Archives in England, the insurance agent and klezmer enthusiast Michael Aylward discovered an enormous trove of pre-World War I vinyl records produced by klezmer musicians in the Russian empire. Until then, this jazz-like genre of East European Jewish music was known almost exclusively from recordings made in the U.S. in the 1920s and 30s. Sarah McConnell speaks with the clarinetist and ethnomusicologist Joel Rubin about the significance of the collection, and plays some of the music. (Audio, 16 minutes.)
