August 23, 2023 | Peter Cole
About the author:

In the 10th, 11th, and 12th centuries, Spanish Jews participated in an efflorescence of literary creativity with few historical parallels. Drawing simultaneously on the language of the Hebrew Bible and the sophisticated Arabic poetry of their day, they created a new poetic idiom that could be both cosmopolitan and devout. Peter Cole, who has translated much of the poetry of this era, discusses its history and sensibilities with J.J. Kimche. They pay particular attention to the soldier, stateman, poet, and rabbi Samuel ibn Naghrilla, known as the nagid, or leader. (Audio, 77 minutes.)
