About the author: Peter Berkowitz is the Tad and Dianne Taube Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution, Stanford University. In 2019 and 2020, he served as Director of Policy Planning at the U.S. State Department. His writings are posted at www.PeterBerkowitz.com.

In a thought-provoking conversation, Peter Berkowitz explains what liberal education is, why it is necessary for a free society, and how and why universities have come to abandon it. He also argues that the exposure to a broad range of ideas need not generate religious skepticism, and that the possible dangers to faith entailed in such an education are worth risking for its benefits—especially for Jews.
