According to the book of Samuel, one of King David’s several wives was the daughter of King Talmai of Geshur. She bore David Absalom, who would later rebel against him. While archaeologists have identified a handful of sites that might have belonged to the kingdom of Geshur, which is not mentioned outside of biblical sources, none is so old as that recently discovered in the Golan. This fortified settlement, Amanda Borschel-Dan writes, dates to sometime between the 11th and 9th centuries BCE—the time of King David himself.
