The Trump administration’s approach toward the Israel-Palestinian conflict, the threat from Iran, and the Middle East in general is far superior—and far more beneficial to the Jewish state—than the approach of its predecessor, argues Michael Doran in the final installment of his Mosaic lecture series on U.S. presidents and Israel. But the current administration suffers from a disconnect between policies as they are formulated and their implementation. More troubling, both Washington and Jerusalem remain far too trusting that Russia will be willing or able to restrain Iran in Syria—where it poses a serious threat to both Israeli and American security.
