When governments around the world condemned Hamas’s attack on the Jewish state, Beijing was among those that avoided doing so—although it has led calls for a ceasefire. Moreover, explains Miles Yu, the Chinese Communist party is encouraging anti-Semitic rhetoric in its state-controlled media. Citizens can even find themselves in trouble with the authorities for too vocally expressing support for Israel.
Why? Because, as Yu explains in a wide-ranging conversation on Chinese foreign policy with Peter Rough, Israel is a democratic ally of the West. As much as it may appreciate Israeli technology or see the country as a good place for investment, “China’s heart and mind are with the adversaries of Israel.” (Audio, 40 minutes.)
