November 10, 2016 | Robert Satloff
About the author: Robert Satloff is the executive director of the Washington Institute for Near East Policy and the author of several books on the Middle East, including Among the Righteous: Lost Stories from the Holocaust’s Long Reach into Arab Lands.

While the president-elect’s campaign promises include destroying Islamic State and getting tough on Iran, notes Robert Satloff, implementing these promises will entail answering some basic questions, like how America will address Russia’s expanding influence in the Middle East. Concerning the U.S.-Israel alliance, which Trump has promised to strengthen, Satloff points out that, for the Jewish state, “it’s not just the bilateral relationship” that matters; rather Israel, “relies upon America’s role in the region as a key element of its deterrent.” (Video, 5 minutes.)
