Today it is hardly unusual to find returnees to religious observance—baalei t’shuvah—in any Orthodox community, but until the 1970s this phenomenon was quite rare. The journalist Ellen Willis, in a 1977 essay in Rolling Stone, documented her brother’s embrace of tradition and her own decision not to follow suit.
