Since its creation, the Jewish state has added two new days of rejoicing to the Jewish calendar: Yom Ha-Atsma’ut, Israel’s independence day (celebrated yesterday), and Yom Yerushalayim, which falls this year on June 2 and celebrates the liberation of Jerusalem’s Old City in the 1967 war. Placing these holidays in the context of both the drama of 20th-century Jewish history and the rhythms of the Jewish year, Meir Soloveichik explores their theological and national significance.
