About the author: Shalom Carmy teaches Bible and Jewish philosophy at Yeshiva University and is an affiliated scholar at the university’s Cardozo law school. He is also the editor emeritus of Tradition, a journal of Orthodox thought.

Repentance, forgiveness, and atonement play a major role in both Judaism and Christianity, although the two religions understand these ideas in very different ways. The theologian and rabbi Shalom Carmy and the Christian Bible scholar Dru Johnson discuss these differences, the scant attention paid to forgiveness in the Tanakh, the difficulties of understanding biblical terminology with regard to these concepts, and what Jewish teaching says about the contemporary demands that nations and peoples repent and seek forgiveness for the sins of their fathers. (Audio, 39 minutes.)
