About the author: Rabbi Mitchell Rocklin is the academic director and dean of Tikvah’s new Lobel Center for Jewish Classical Education. He is also director of the Jewish classical education concentration track at the University of Dallas.

Rather than offer the righteous the spiritual blessings of the future life, the Hebrew Bible for the most part emphasizes the earthly rewards of peace and prosperity, of grain, wine, and oil. Starting from this premise, Mitchell Rocklin shows how this attitude plays out in classical rabbinic texts, and contrasts it with otherworldly trends in both Christianity and in Hellenistic philosophy. He goes on to discuss how Judaism’s covenantal view of mankind contributed to the evolution of modern economic freedom, and shaped Jewish economic history. (Interview by Dan Hugger. Audio, 43 minutes.)
