Despite the popularity of the claim that Judaism is “a religion of deed and not creed,” few would really seek to argue that Judaism does not rely on a set of fundamental beliefs. Many rabbis—most famously Moses Maimonides—sought to codify those doctrines, although there has rarely been much consensus about what they are. In conversation with J.J. Kimche, Marc B.
