An economist and the son of a Southern Baptist preacher, Robin Hanson has tried to study the idea of the sacred by examining what characteristics people use to describe it. He then decided to ask David Wolpe, a rabbi, to help him define sanctity. Together the two examine how ideas of holiness shape human behavior, the sometimes-dangerous persistence of ideas of sanctity among those who have abandoned religion, and the role of the clergy in a society skeptical of authority.
