July 17, 2023 | Yoram Hazony
About the author: Yoram Hazony is president of the Herzl Institute and the author of God and Politics in Esther, The Philosophy of Hebrew Scripture, and The Jewish State: The Struggle for Israel’s Soul. His essays on history, politics, and religion appear in a wide variety of publications. His next book, Empire and Nation, is forthcoming from Cambridge University Press.

In conversation with the Protestant theologian Alastair Roberts, Yoram Hazony explains why he believes any consideration of the Western political tradition must include the Tanakh’s understanding of the nature and governance of human societies. He then illustrates how the second chapter of Exodus criticizes naïve revolutionism, how the story of Joseph provides parallels to the intertribal struggles described by the Prophets, how the biblical narrative resists any sort of simplistic political readings, and much else.
