Jews first came to Indonesia from the Netherlands and South America. Many eventually converted to Christianity, although even many of these converts continued to maintain some sense of Jewish identity. Tovia Singer, who serves as the rabbi of Jakarta, has presided over the embrace of Judaism by hundreds of Indonesians. (Interview by Jeremy Gimpel; audio, about 25 minutes)
