The machinations surrounding the upcoming election of Israel’s next chief rabbis show that the ultra-Orthodox are not the only religious group causing problems for the state. 

Under Nir Barkat, Jerusalem’s economy has grown apace and the city’s non-haredi population is holding its own. 

If religious Zionism is to reclaim its place in Israeli society, it must embrace a Judaism that stands on ideas and values, not on divine authority.
